Egypt's chief archaeologist said on Thursday he had identified a badly eroded pyramid south of Cairo as that of the Fifth Dynasty Pharaoh Menkauhor, who ruled Egypt in the 24th century BC. The identification by Zahi Hawass could end the long controversy over the structure known as the Headless Pyramid, first described by the German archaeologist Lepsius in the 19th century.

Egypt threatens to pull out of Swiss antiquities show

Egyptian antiquities chief Zahi Hawass threatened on Wednesday to withdraw archeological items on show in Switzerland because of a parallel picture exhibition he deemed offensive to Egypt. Pictures "undermining Egypt and its civilisation" by Swiss photographer Monique Jacot are on show alongside the Egyptian antiquities, Hawass said.

Dr Hawass Receives the Golden Medal Award

During a gala ceremony at the Spanish Embassy in Cairo, Spanish ambassador to Egypt Antonio López Martinez presented to Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the “Golden Medal of the Royal Band,” in recognition of his devotion and untiring efforts to promote and protect Egypt’s cultural and archaeological heritage. This award is given by the government of the Spanish province of Ourense to honor cultural personalities around the world.
